Dungeon-crawlers à la Descent have really flooded the board game market over the last few years. Only once in a while, you will get a game that brings a refreshing, fun and innovating feel to an existing genre. Arcadia Quest is that game.

In Arcadia Quest, every player controls a Guild, comprised of several heroes. Each hero has two scores: Defense (which indicates how many dice you can use to block) and Health (how many hits you can survive) and one attribute, which is always a hero-specific bonus.

All attack scores are generated by your equipment. Every guild starts out with the same Basic Equipment, which can be divided between your heroes as you see fit. Each hero has four Slots, and hence can never have more than four pieces of equipment.

Depending on the scenario - which you can play on a stand-alone basis or as part of a campaign - the guilds will have to solve X amount of quests. This will often be PvE-quests, but most of the time scenario's will also throw in some PvP-action. The guild that is the first to solve three quests, wins the scenario.

All guilds need to finish the same quests but only the hero dealing the final blow, will take the glory from the field. Said killstealer might not only deprive you of your hard-earned monster, but might also finish off your wounded hero in one handy go.

The mechanics behind each turn are very simple. Either you move first and attack after, or you attack first and make your move afterwards. For a melee attack, you need to be up close with your target. Ranged Attacks have no maximum range but are limited by line of sight.

In order to attack, you need to tap the equipment card you want to use. If you haven't got any unused cards anymore, you will no longer able to attack and it might be time to rest for a while. After a rest, you will be able to ready all your cards again AND you heal all your wounds. Important !

As the playing field is reasonably small, and crowded with monsters, doors and Heroes, it is almost impossible to play Arcadia Quest in your own quiet corner. As there is no maximum range, danger is lurking around every turn, which makes the game both fun and super dynamic.

If you play in campaign mode, you can use the gold you collect during a game, to buy new and stronger items in-between scenario's. The final goal of the campaign is to defeat the evil Overlord: No simple task even for a well-build Hero.

Even in the last scenario, the player that deals the last blow on the overlord will get the credit. There is more to winning the campaign though: gathering the most titles or gold overall or even dying least over the course of all scenario's, will generate you extra points.

Arcadia Quest is brilliant in its simplicity. There is a lot of content (PvE, PvP, Equipment, Upgrades, Campaign mode), but all rules are clear and simple which makes the game both fun and refreshing. Another great plus that benefits the immersion immensely is the magnificent miniatures coming with the game. Both Heroes and Monsters are of exceptional quality. Heavenly, all the way !
